Interview Dressing Tips For Men

Nov 11th, 2011 Greg Savoie

You've definitely heard about the statement "first impression counts", nowhere does this statement sounds so true like when it comes to job interviews. If you didn't already know; then let me remind you that your interview attire plays a very important role in your general assessment as a candidate and somehow influences your success or failure in the interview.

Simply put, your interview wear is MORE VITAL THAN YOU THINK; you should know that a job interview is a time to sell your skills to the employer and not the time to showcase your bad dressing habits and poor sense of style.

If you get the interview attire right, then you have a perfect chance to create a lasting impression. Below I have compiled a list of tips on how to properly dress for the job interview to get you started.

Attire

Before you decide on the attire, find out how formal the organization is and if you'll be required to wear a suit. As a standard practice in any corporate organization, a suit is the norm and you should present yourself accordingly, this is especially true in organizations that belong to legal, banking and finance industry, for interviews in such organizations, go for dark gray, black or navy suit.

Black should also apply to shoes, preferably lace-up and a black matching belt. Shirts can be blue, which is a great color choice because it blends well with most skin complexions and suit colors. As for the tie, chose a solid one, preferably striped.

If the organization isn't very strict in regards to dress code, which means it has a less formal approach to interviews as is the case with technology and software development companies. Go for a neat casual that is much better than what every one else in the firm is wearing, avoid shouting colors and fancy designs.

A good example of what I'm talking about is neatly pressed pair of khakis or jean, neatly pressed shirt - this could be a button down, decent matching shoes and some nice belt.

Add a blazer to spice things up especially if you're wearing khaki pants.

Belts and shoes

Ensure that belt and shoes are in sync by choosing colors that blend well, for example if you're wearing a dark gray, brown or black outfit then you can complement them with black shoes, for an outfit with medium tone colors, dark brown shoes will match well.

Hope this doesn't sounds like a motherly reminder but remember to shine your shoes prior to the interview. Presenting yourself for an interview with spot marked shoes is unsightly and makes you look disorganized.

Accessorize

Try your best to keep your accessories minimal and decent. For your resume, testimonials and other important documents carry them in a bound portfolio. It's best to limit your accessories to cufflinks and watches if you choose to wear jewelry.

Irrespective of the industry, men are always advised to use jewelry sparingly. Gold chains, necklaces, earrings and gold teeth should be left to the showbiz industry.
